Measuring Impressions

The measuring method depends on the impression hardness, the geometry being inspected, and the instruments available in your laboratory.

Contact vs Non Contact Measurement

Non contact measurement is the recommended method for all Plastiform impressions. The instrument never touches the replica, so there is no risk of deforming it.

Contact measurement is possible with Rigid impressions (80 to 100 Shore A) and with some Medium impressions from approximately 65 Shore A upward. The probe or stylus must not compress or scratch the surface.

Plastiform is compatible with most measuring instruments available on the market.

How to prepare an Impression for Measurement

Flexible and Medium impressions may deform under their own weight if left unsupported.

For profile projection or vision systems. Place the impression on a flat stage. Ensure the area of interest is horizontal and well lit. Do not clamp or press the impression. We recommend using the Double Blade cutter in this situation.

For sliced impressions. The slice must stand flat, not tilted.

For roughness testing. Fix the Rigid impression to a flat base with a thin layer of adhesive wax or putty to ensure it won’t slide with the sensor. The measured surface must be level and stable.
